This paper presents a real-time augmented reality (AR) system for UAV (drone) imagery, focusing on occlusion handling—a key challenge in aerial AR applications. The proposed approach leverages monocular depth estimation to achieve depth-aware occlusion without relying on prebuilt 3D city models or semantic labels.
A UAV-specific RGB–depth dataset was constructed to fine-tune a transformer-based depth estimation model. The system was then implemented on portable hardware, achieving real-time performance (approximately 27 fps).
Both offline and real-time experiments were conducted to evaluate depth accuracy, occlusion quality, and system performance. The results demonstrate improved robustness compared to existing approaches, particularly in complex urban environments, while avoiding reliance on pre-existing 3D models.
This work aims to contribute to more practical and scalable AR-based visualization tools for participatory urban planning.
