6月に入り、研究活動も本格化してきた頃かと思います。今回は、研究者・技術者としての「自律飛行」についてお話ししたいと思います。
ジャーナル論文や国際会議論文の採択は大変素晴らしい成果です。しかし、出版料や渡航費、参加登録費などの支援が自動的に得られるわけではありません。大学や研究機関では、研究予算や資金提供条件に応じて支援が行われており、研究費には限りがあります。
そのため、博士前期・後期課程の学生には、研究だけでなく、自ら研究環境を切り拓く力も求められます。例えば、渡航費補助、フェローシップ、学生支援プログラム、外部資金などを主体的に調べ、活用する力です。
学術研究は、研究そのものに加え、資金獲得、研究計画、プロジェクトマネジメントとも密接に結びついています。在学中に申請の経験を積むことは、将来の大きな財産になるはずです。
国際会議への投稿を考える際には、採択後に必要となる渡航費や参加費、利用可能な支援制度について、早い段階から調べてみてください。適切な制度が見つかった場合には、戦略的な申請方法について一緒に考えましょう。
外山滋比古先生の『思考の整理学』では、人間を「グライダー（受動的な人）」と「飛行機（自力で飛べる人）」にたとえています。
研究者の世界における「飛行機」とは、自ら研究費を獲得し、質の高い研究を遂行し、その成果を論文として発信できる人なのかもしれません。
皆さんの研究活動をできる限り支援したいと思っています。同時に、本業である研究に主体的に時間を投資し、自律飛行できる研究者・技術者へと成長していくことを期待しています。

As we enter June, your research activities are likely becoming more active. Today, I would like to share some thoughts on “autonomous flight” as a researcher or engineer.
Having journal papers or conference papers accepted is an excellent achievement. However, financial support for publication fees, travel expenses, and registration fees is not automatically guaranteed. At universities and research institutions, such support depends on available budgets and funding conditions, and research funds are always limited.
Therefore, graduate students are expected not only to conduct research but also to develop the ability to create their own research opportunities. This includes proactively seeking and utilizing travel grants, fellowships, student support programs, and external funding opportunities.
Academic research is closely connected not only to research itself, but also to fundraising, proposal writing, and project management. Gaining experience in applying for funding during graduate school will become a valuable asset for your future career.
When considering submitting to an international conference, please investigate in advance the expected travel costs, registration fees, and available support programs. If you find an appropriate funding opportunity, I would be happy to discuss application strategies with you.

In the world of research, an “airplane” may be someone who can obtain research funding independently, conduct high-quality research, and disseminate the results through publications.
I would like to support your research activities as much as possible. At the same time, I hope you will proactively invest your time in research—your primary mission—and gradually grow into researchers and engineers capable of autonomous flight.
