Aiming to realize Society 5.0—an ultra-smart society—we are developing methodologies for environmental design that comprehensively integrate the relationships among humans, artifacts, and nature. In parallel, we pursue the advancement of environmental design systems through the sophisticated use of information and communication technologies (ICT), including AI, and engage in research and education in environmental informatics from a comprehensive engineering perspective.

On August 6, the Open Campus event was held at the School of Engineering, The University of Osaka.

Our Laboratory of Environmental Design and Information Technology (Fukuda Laboratory) hosted a laboratory tour entitled “Environmental Design Informatics: Experience AI, XR (Digital Twins), and Drones”, welcoming 18 high school students in each session.

During the tour, participants experienced demonstrations of 3D Gaussian Splatting, an AI-based 3D reconstruction technology, our original AR system that overlays the laboratory mascot, Dr. Wani, onto visitors’ faces, and a drone equipped with RGB and thermal infrared cameras.

Current The University of Osaka students also shared their experiences of university life, research activities, and daily life in the laboratory through informal conversations with the participants.

We hope that this experience inspired the students to explore environmental design research utilizing AI, XR, and drone technologies, and helped them envision their future academic paths.
