(Academic Journal)
(Academic Paper)
(Original Research Article)
(Review Article)
Literature Review
- Web of Science (WoS)
- Scopus
- Google Scholar
- CumInCAD(建築・都市・設計系)
- Elsevier、Springer、Taylor & Francis、Wiley
- SJR(Scimago)
(WoS / Scopus)
Literature Review
Definitions
- Academic Journal
A peer-reviewed publication that disseminates research findings. - Academic Paper
Includes both original research articles and review articles. - Original Research Article
A paper that presents novel findings or contributions not found in previous studies. - Review Article
A paper that systematically collects, analyzes, and synthesizes existing research on a specific topic.
Article Databases
To demonstrate the novelty of your research, it is essential to conduct a comprehensive review of existing studies and present them in the literature review section of your paper.
We recommend starting your search from reliable academic databases:
- Web of Science (WoS)
- Scopus
Journals indexed in these databases undergo rigorous evaluation processes and are considered highly reliable.
(Access is typically available through university subscriptions.)
Other useful databases include:
- Google Scholar
- CumInCAD (for architecture, urban planning, and design computing)
- University library databases
How to Identify Target Journals
- Check major publishers such as Elsevier, Springer, Taylor & Francis, and Wiley
- Use the “Sources” function in Scopus to identify relevant journals
- Review journal rankings (e.g., percentile, quartile)
- Start with top-tier journals (e.g., top 15%) in your field
- Use platforms such as Scimago Journal Rank (SJR) to compare journal impact
Note: While reviewing journals where your lab members publish is useful, do not limit your scope to them.
Practical Steps for Literature Review
- Start with review articles
Understand research trends, key topics, and major researchers in the field - Perform keyword searches (WoS / Scopus)
- Carefully choose keywords
- Use thesaurus tools to expand related terms
- Identify leading researchers
- Look for researchers with consistent publications
- Pay attention to corresponding authors
- Trace citation networks
- Highly cited papers are generally influential
- Recently published papers with many citations are particularly important
- Build a daily habit
- Read 1–2 academic papers per day
- Summarize and relate them to your own research
Important Considerations
- Do not rely only on papers published within your own lab
- Papers recommended by supervisors should be starting points, not endpoints
- Treat non-peer-reviewed papers and preprints with caution
- In some fields (e.g., computer science), conference proceedings are important
- Avoid citing undergraduate or master’s theses (doctoral dissertations may be cited with caution)
How to Establish Novelty
Novelty in academic research means:
- Clearly identifying what has not been addressed in previous studies
- Positioning your work against closely related research and demonstrating unmet gaps
- Showing how your work contributes to the aims and scope of the target journal
Final Note
Write actively and submit your work.
Do not be afraid of rejection at the editorial or peer-review stage.
Such experiences are an essential part of academic growth and will strengthen your research profile (CV).
