Oral Presentations and Discussions at Conferences
At international conferences and research presentations, not only the presentation itself but also the discussion is critically important.
Presentation
- Do not read from a script. Instead, speak directly to your audience.
- Allocate sufficient time not only for preparing slides but also for practicing your delivery.
Mindset for Discussion
Q&A sessions are opportunities to:
- Foster constructive discussions
- Deepen understanding among the audience
- Contribute to the session and research community
Preparation
- Anticipate possible questions and prepare your answers in advance
- Prepare backup slides and keep them hidden for use during Q&A (this is standard practice)
Additionally:
- Expand your range of possible responses
Questions in conferences are often broader than those in lab meetings or one-on-one discussions. - Learn from others
From the first day, attend presentations and think about possible questions (and ask them if appropriate).
Observe how others ask questions and reflect on how similar questions might be directed at your work.
Understanding Question Styles
At international conferences, questions often follow certain patterns:
- Questions are often accompanied by the questioner’s own opinions, which may be lengthy
→ It is not always necessary to understand every detail; focus on the key point. - Some questions take the form:
“Based on your presentation, I thought about X. What do you think?”
→ To respond effectively, develop the habit of comparing others’ perspectives with your own while listening.
Networking
- During coffee breaks and workshops, bring business cards or use LinkedIn to introduce yourself
- Briefly explain your presentation and invite others to attend your talk
Engaging with many participants helps you understand their perspectives as well as different styles of English communication.
