Environmental Design and Information Technology Laboratory (Fukuda Laboratory)

Aiming to realize Society 5.0—an ultra-smart society—we are developing methodologies for environmental design that comprehensively integrate the relationships among humans, artifacts, and nature. In parallel, we pursue the advancement of environmental design systems through the sophisticated use of information and communication technologies (ICT), including AI, and engage in research and education in environmental informatics from a comprehensive engineering perspective.

(Elsevier)

Research Integrity and Plagiarism

Research integrity is a fundamental principle of our laboratory.
Plagiarism, including unintentional cases, is strictly prohibited. Proper citation and acknowledgment of sources are essential.

All manuscripts must be carefully checked before submission to avoid any potential issues.

■ Responsibility

Undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral theses are individual works, and the authors bear primary responsibility for their content.

■ Use of Plagiarism Detection Tools

We strongly recommend the use of plagiarism detection tools prior to submission.

  • Undergraduate thesis: Optional
  • Master’s thesis: Recommended
  • Doctoral dissertation: Required (submission of results is necessary)

Plagiarism checks (e.g., iThenticate) are also standard practice for journal and conference submissions.

■ Notes on Detection Tools

Traditional tools detect identical text, while newer tools may detect paraphrased or similar expressions.
Therefore, proper citation and original writing are essential.

Example tool:

■ Self-Plagiarism

Reusing previously published work requires careful attention.

  • Conference → Conference: Generally not allowed
  • Conference → Journal: Allowed with substantial extension and clear contribution
  • Journal → Journal: Not allowed

■ Final Note

While we encourage proactive research and learning from mistakes, violations of research integrity must be strictly avoided.
Rules and standards evolve over time; always refer to the latest guidelines.

Understanding the Peer Review Process

Overview

One of the key goals of your research is the publication of academic papers (journal articles and international conference proceedings).

Before publication, submitted manuscripts are evaluated by editors and peer reviewers.

Understanding how reviewers assess papers will help you to:

  • improve how you write your paper, and
  • design a stronger research framework.

It can also provide insights into how to read existing literature effectively and identify research gaps.

Reviewer’s Perspective

Peer reviewers typically evaluate a manuscript based on the following criteria:

  • Novelty: Does the work present new knowledge beyond existing studies?
  • Significance: Does it contribute meaningfully to the field?
  • Validity: Are the methods and results sound and reliable?
  • Clarity: Is the paper logically structured and clearly written?
  • Reproducibility: Can the work be replicated by others?

Being aware of these criteria is essential when designing and writing your research.

Reference (Elsevier Resources)

One of the major academic publishers, Elsevier, provides useful guidance for reviewers:

In particular, the “Structured peer review question banks” can be used as a practical checklist when preparing your manuscript.

Final Note

Understanding the peer review process is not only about getting your paper accepted.
It is fundamental to designing and conducting high-quality research.

When writing your paper, always try to evaluate your work from the reviewer’s perspective.
