Aiming to realize Society 5.0—an ultra-smart society—we are developing methodologies for environmental design that comprehensively integrate the relationships among humans, artifacts, and nature. In parallel, we pursue the advancement of environmental design systems through the sophisticated use of information and communication technologies (ICT), including AI, and engage in research and education in environmental informatics from a comprehensive engineering perspective.

    Perception(知覚) → Evaluation(評価) → Generation(生成) → Integration(統合)

    Message from the Director

Welcome to the Laboratory of Environmental Design Informatics.

Our laboratory is founded on the vision of reconstructing environments—where humans, artifacts, and nature coexist—through informatics. We seek to establish a new paradigm of environmental design grounded in data and artificial intelligence (AI).

Today’s architectural, urban, and social environments are complex, multilayered systems shaped by energy demands, disaster resilience, health, landscape, historical context, and sustainability. Designing and managing such environments requires more than experience and intuition; it calls for an integrated framework that combines objective data and computational intelligence within the design process itself.

We therefore reconceptualize environmental design as a dynamic cycle consisting of four interrelated phases:

    Perception → Evaluation → Generation → Integration

We begin by precisely perceiving the environment through advanced sensing and digital modeling.
We then evaluate its performance using data-driven and interpretable AI methods.
Next, we generate new design possibilities through generative AI and simulation.
Finally, we integrate these outcomes into broader urban and societal systems.

Through this cycle, our goal is to move beyond merely understanding environments toward actively redesigning them for a better future.

Our research spans 3D measurement, point-cloud processing, digital twins, machine learning, Graph Neural Networks, generative AI, automated BIM generation, and urban-scale digital platforms. Yet these technologies are not ends in themselves. They are means to enhance evidence-based decision-making and to realize sustainable, resilient, and creative environments.

The English name of our laboratory—Environmental Design and Information Technology—forms the acronym “EDIT.” This word reflects our philosophy. We begin by “reading” the environment, grasping its structure, reweaving its components, and reconstructing it in a better form. By integrating Engineering, Data, and Intelligence, we connect design practice to societal Transformation.

Our laboratory welcomes students and researchers from diverse backgrounds, including architecture, urban engineering, civil engineering, computer science, and AI. We encourage those who wish to cross disciplinary boundaries, explore data-driven design, and pursue research with real-world impact.

The future of environmental design is being reshaped through data and intelligence. We look forward to working together at the forefront of this transformation.
