Environmental Design and Information Technology Laboratory (Fukuda Laboratory)

Aiming to realize Society 5.0—an ultra-smart society—we are developing methodologies for environmental design that comprehensively integrate the relationships among humans, artifacts, and nature. In parallel, we pursue the advancement of environmental design systems through the sophisticated use of information and communication technologies (ICT), including AI, and engage in research and education in environmental informatics from a comprehensive engineering perspective.

Skills to Develop Before Joining Our Lab

As essential skills to acquire before joining a research lab, our laboratory requires both the ability to understand environments and the ability to treat them as information systems. Students are expected to develop the following foundations:

1. Foundations in Mathematics and Natural Sciences
Discrete mathematics, linear algebra, calculus, probability and statistics, as well as physics and mechanics for environmental modeling
→ The basis for understanding and describing environments as quantitative and mathematical models rather than relying on intuition.

2. Domain Knowledge in Environment and Urban Studies
Environmental engineering, urban planning, environmental design, energy systems, environmental management, and sustainability
→ The foundation for determining what should be evaluated and what should be optimized.

3. Information Technology and Programming Skills
Programming in C++, Python, data processing and visualization, and algorithmic thinking
→ The ability not only to “use” AI and simulations, but to understand their principles and implement them effectively.

4. Logical Thinking and Communication Skills
Logical writing in Japanese and English, presentation skills, and communication abilities
→ Essential competencies for connecting research outcomes to society and disseminating them internationally.

5. A Perspective Linking Engineering and Society
Interest in the relationships among nature, humans, and artifacts; awareness of the societal impact of technology; understanding of data-driven decision-making
→ A mindset that prevents technology from becoming an end in itself and instead directs it toward solving societal challenges.
