VR Visualization of CFD Analysis Results

3D Digital Archiving of the Tekijuku Building

Point cloud data (overall exterior view of the Tekijuku building)
3D model (large student room)
Point cloud data (pillar in the large student room with preserved sword marks)

This project focuses on the creation of a high-fidelity 3D digital archive of the Tekijuku building, one of the historical origins of The University of Osaka. The initiative was realized through crowdfunding and aims to support long-term preservation and disaster preparedness by accurately recording the current state of the building in a reproducible digital format.

To capture the structure, we employed a hybrid approach combining 3D laser scanning (point cloud acquisition) and photogrammetry (mesh generation from high-resolution images). This enabled the development of detailed 3D models that represent not only the geometry of the building but also its textures and material characteristics. Historical traces, such as sword marks left on wooden pillars, were also recorded in three-dimensional form wherever possible.

The resulting datasets are organized into multiple levels of detail (LOD), ranging from lightweight models accessible on standard computers to high-resolution data suitable for advanced analysis and restoration. Selected models are publicly available on online platforms, supporting applications in education, research, and cultural dissemination.

This project demonstrates the potential of digital technologies in the preservation, restoration, and reinterpretation of cultural heritage, offering a new approach to passing historical assets on to future generations.

Tottori Castle Three-Story Turret AR Reconstruction

An Augmented Reality (AR) system was developed to virtually reconstruct the former three-story turret of the Ninomaru area at the historic Tottori Castle ruins. The project aimed to promote tourism and increase public interest in the ongoing castle restoration initiative.

The system was implemented as a WebAR platform accessible through smartphones and tablets without requiring a dedicated application. Visitors could easily access the AR experience on-site using a standard web browser.

A full-scale 3D model of the turret was superimposed onto the remaining stone foundation, allowing users to experience the reconstructed structure within the real castle environment. An interactive alignment method enabled users to manually match the virtual and real stone walls for stable AR positioning.

Multiple viewpoints were designed throughout the site so visitors could experience the turret from different perspectives while walking around the ruins. The AR system was publicly demonstrated during the 2023 “Tottori Sanjūnimangoku Castle Festival,” where many visitors experienced the reconstruction on-site.

This project represents a practical application of XR technologies for cultural heritage visualization and tourism-oriented urban engagement.

Tango Kokubunji Five-Storied Pagoda AR/MR: Miyazu

In the Amanohashidate area of Miyazu City, Kyoto, we conducted a project to virtually reconstruct the lost five-story pagoda of Tango Kokubunji Temple using AR/MR (Augmented and Mixed Reality) technologies. The project was first presented in 2020 as part of Another Kyoto – Atelier of Light. In 2022, the system was redeveloped within our laboratory and exhibited again at the same event.

The AR pagoda was modeled based on the pagoda depicted in Sesshu’s Amanohashidate-zu, referring to historical documents and architectural styles of surviving pagodas from the same historical period. A virtual pagoda approximately 40 meters in height was superimposed onto the original foundation stone locations of the Tango Kokubunji ruins, allowing visitors to experience the reconstructed structure within the historical landscape overlooking Amanohashidate.

This project addressed technical challenges related to large-scale outdoor AR visualization at night, including spatial registration (tracking) and visibility enhancement. The system was implemented as a WebAR application that required no dedicated app installation, enabling users to experience the content directly through smartphone web browsers. Furthermore, the redeveloped 2022 system evolved into a server-side rendering architecture capable of streaming rendered video to users in real time.

The project also integrated lighting design with AR expression to create dynamic and immersive digital illuminations that changed over time. By combining historical landscapes, media art, and XR technologies, the project explored new experiential approaches for communicating regional cultural heritage.

Corridor House: Itako

VR Visualization of CFD Analysis Results
Markerless AR Simulation Workflow

“Corridor House” in Itako, Ibaraki, is a residential design project that applied an integrated workflow combining Building Information Modeling (BIM), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Virtual Reality (VR), and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies.

The house features a double-height living room surrounded by a circulation corridor, with private rooms and terraces arranged around the outer perimeter. During the design process, digital simulations were conducted to examine thermal comfort, terrace privacy, and parking layout along a narrow access road.

CFD simulations based on the BIM model revealed downdraft airflow around the staircase during winter conditions. To address this issue, a movable sliding door was added between the staircase and corridor, and subsequent simulations confirmed improved thermal comfort in the living space.

A VR environment including neighboring houses was also created to verify that the terrace would not be visible from surrounding buildings. In addition, CFD results were visualized within the VR environment to support intuitive understanding of airflow and temperature distribution within the architectural space.

AR simulations were further conducted on-site by overlaying the proposed 3D model onto the real environment, enabling the client and designers to examine parking arrangements together. This project demonstrates an integrated design workflow linking BIM, CFD, and XR technologies to support environmental performance evaluation and spatial experience in architectural design.

VR Azuchi Castle: Digital Reconstruction and Immersive Visualization of Lost Heritage

Azuchi Castle, built by Oda Nobunaga, was lost only three years after its completion, and its physical reconstruction remains difficult due to limited historical evidence and preservation constraints. This project digitally reconstructed the castle and its surrounding town using historical documents, archaeological findings, and architectural studies, and realized immersive visualization through VR technologies.

A location-based AR/VR system (“VR Azuchi Castle TimeScope”) allows users to experience the historical landscape overlaid onto the present environment using mobile devices. In addition, a high-resolution theater-type VR system enables interactive exploration of the castle tower, fortifications, and castle town.

Through industry–academia–government collaboration, this project demonstrates the application of digital heritage for tourism and education. It also contributed technical advancements in large-scale terrain modeling, level-of-detail (LOD) control, and real-time rendering, which have been further developed in current research on urban digital twins and XR systems.
