What We Do: Research Framework

What We Do: Research Framework
The Environmental Design and Information Technology Laboratory aims to reconstruct human-built-natural environments from an informatics perspective toward the realization of Society 5.0, a “super-smart society.”
We reinterpret the environmental design process through a structured framework of
Perception → Evaluation → Generation → Integration,
systematically reconfiguring the built environment as well as urban and natural systems through information science.
Our research pillars include:
- Perception and reconstruction of the built environment using 3D sensing, point cloud processing, and digital twins
- Evaluation of environmental performance, safety, and comfort using AI, machine learning, and graph neural networks
- Design support and automation through generative AI and simulation
- Development of integrated information platforms for visualization and analysis of urban and natural environments
Through these efforts, we conduct interdisciplinary engineering research spanning architecture, urban planning, civil engineering, and environmental engineering.
Rather than merely developing tools, our distinctive focus lies in advancing evidence-based decision-making in environmental design through data-driven methodologies.
Lab Ecosystem and Growth Process
Based on the research framework described above, our lab operates through a dynamic ecosystem of people and collaborations. The overall structure is illustrated below.

Students typically join the lab as undergraduate seniors (B4), where they conduct their graduation research. Many continue to the master’s program (M1–M2), and most proceed to professional careers after completing their degrees. Some students advance to the doctoral program (D1–D3+), where they engage in advanced research and are expected to publish in academic journals as part of their degree requirements.
International students may enter through a preparatory research student period before enrolling in graduate programs, and exchange students also participate in research activities for shorter durations. In addition, working professionals, postdoctoral researchers, and international fellows contribute to the lab’s research environment.
Faculty members support these diverse members in both education and research, while actively promoting collaborative projects with universities, research institutes, government agencies, and industry partners worldwide. Students and postdoctoral researchers often participate in these collaborations, gaining practical research experience.
Through this dynamic structure, the lab fosters a “spiral-up” model of growth, where research activities and human resource development continuously reinforce each other.
