As essential skills to acquire before joining a research lab, our laboratory requires both the ability to understand environments and the ability to treat them as information systems. Students are expected to develop the following foundations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Foundations in Mathematics and Natural Sciences<\/strong>
Discrete mathematics, linear algebra, calculus, probability and statistics, as well as physics and mechanics for environmental modeling
\u2192 The basis for understanding and describing environments as quantitative and mathematical models rather than relying on intuition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Domain Knowledge in Environment and Urban Studies<\/strong>
Environmental engineering, urban planning, environmental design, energy systems, environmental management, and sustainability
\u2192 The foundation for determining what should be evaluated and what should be optimized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Information Technology and Programming Skills<\/strong>
Programming in C++, Python, data processing and visualization, and algorithmic thinking
\u2192 The ability not only to \u201cuse\u201d AI and simulations, but to understand their principles and implement them effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Logical Thinking and Communication Skills<\/strong>
Logical writing in Japanese and English, presentation skills, and communication abilities
\u2192 Essential competencies for connecting research outcomes to society and disseminating them internationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. A Perspective Linking Engineering and Society<\/strong>
Interest in the relationships among nature, humans, and artifacts; awareness of the societal impact of technology; understanding of data-driven decision-making
